How to Refill Your Energy Tank
Can you recall a time when you felt so strong and so healthy that nothing could stop you? As a teenager, you might have gone outside in a t-shirt or shorts on a cold day. At the time, you might have been fine, but the adult version of you might do the same and catch a cold.
As a young adult, you might have partied every night and gotten just a few hours of sleep. You might have been fine then, but it would take you days to recover now.
You were stronger then than you are today even though you did not have good habits. Why? When you were young, your energy was strong and you felt healthy. But everything you do requires energy. The younger version of you could afford to spend energy, but as you age, your resources wane. If you are continually pulling from your energy tank and not taking the steps to refill it, you eventually feel the effects of your actions.
Three Ways to Refill Your Tank:
- Get adequate rest. We’re often moving so quickly that we crash and burn by the end of the day and get into bed feeling completely depleted. You need Qi to get quality sleep! Make sure you pace yourself throughout the day and leave time for some peace and quiet. Go for a walk, practice Qigong in the morning and before you go to bed, and take a few things off of your to-do list. Here’s a great Qigong practice to get you started: The Dragon Stands Between Heaven and Earth.
- Eat easy-to-digest foods with healing properties. For Winter, focus on foods that give your Kidney—your energy foundation—a boost. And remember to keep your body warm by drinking hot tea and eating cooked vegetables and soups. Visit our recipe section for healing foods and recipe ideas.
- Shellfish
- Bone Soup
- Nuts & Seeds (walnuts, pine nuts, sesame seeds, sunflower seeds, walnut or sesame oil)
- Cauliflower
- Seaweed
- Black beans
- Bean curd
- Cinnamon
- Cloves
- Drop the mind and connect to your Heart, the source of your inner peace. Practice Spirit Gate Breathing, a simple yet powerful meditation.
- Focus on your navel. Your navel is the space that connects to your mother’s womb, which contains love, growth, wisdom, and a promise for the future. Your mother’s navel connects to your grandmother and her mother, and on, and on. Through this space, you connect to all of your genetic bloodlines throughout time and experience the inseparability of time and space.
- Close your eyes. Put your palm over your navel. Breathe in and slowly suck in your stomach as you slowly count to five. Then breathe out and slowly push out your stomach to the count of five. Repeat this practice multiple times per day.
