Bok Choy: A Liver-Loving Food!
In the context of Chinese culture, Bok choy, or Chinese cabbage, is considered a superfood. With its cooling properties, bok choy is valued for its ability to not only nourish the body, but support digestion and promote overall well-being. This versatile vegetable can be steamed, sauteed, grilled, or pan fried, and added to stir-fries, soups, and more.
While bok choy is rich in vitamins A, C, and K, as well as calcium, potassium, and manganese, TCM looks beyond the physical properties of foods. Instead, the food’s essence, or how it energetically relates to the body’s organ systems, becomes paramount. While bok choy may be a small vegetable, it is surprisingly hearty. Grown in spring and fall seasons, this fast-growing veggie can withstand cool to cold temperatures. Its taste can even improve after being exposed to light frost. Fast-growing foods are generally not as Qi-filled as those with longer growing seasons; however, this frost-resistant favorite is a perfect food to support the body’s Liver function.
Liver function is responsible for the smooth flow of Qi and Blood throughout the body. When Liver Qi cannot flow freely, the body experiences energetic imbalances at the invisible level. If not addressed, the body communicates with you by turning these energetic imbalances into physical and/or emotional symptoms down the road.
Support Your Liver
The Liver/Gallbladder is the primary organ system for Spring. Learn how bok choy can support your Liver as the seasons transition.
- Cooling Properties: Excess heat can disrupt the energetic function of the Liver. Bok choy helps to reduce excess heat and inflammation in the body.
- Digestive Health: The Liver is an important partner organ in the digestive process. Bok choy soothes the Stomach and aids in digestion.
- Hydration: Bok choy has a high water content, which naturally supports Kidney function.
- Purifying: The Liver helps to remove toxins from the body. Bok choy helps to support this process so the Liver can function at optimal levels.
